“Nervous Man in a Four-Dollar Room” (1960) with Joe Mantell.

“Last Night of a Jockey” (1963) with Mickey Rooney.

So begins the shredding of Rhoades’s soul, a battle of wills between his mousy, pushover self (“Why am I scared? Why am I all the time scared?”) and his more confident, conscientious other (“I know you, Jackie Rhoades. You ain’t no killer.”), who appears in the mirror over the bureau. A crummy rented room is again the setting for a bout of self-loathing in “Last Night of a Jockey.” Grady (Mickey Rooney) is a jockey banned from the sport for gambling on his own races; he’s a disgrace, “a rotten apple bruised and yellowed by dealing in dirt,” Serling tells us. Unable to face himself, Grady smashes all the reflective objects in his room, but his nagging inner voice will not leave him alone. Wishing aloud that he were a “bigger” man, Grady collapses into a sleep; hours later, he finds that he’s outgrown his bed—like Alice, he’s sprouted to an unseemly size. He is now, as wished for, ten feet tall—a grotesque. So when the phone rings and he’s given a second chance in the saddle, Grady can only bellow in frustration: he’s a giant trapped inside a dollhouse, a real freak.
